You’ve seen a couple reminders from us recently about PCI as well data and computer security. Along those lines, we want to remind you about the operating system (OS) running on your computers and the ending support in the coming years. Below are some questions and the related answers you may have.
Are operating system updates really necessary?
Yes, we recommend your computer be updated with the latest patches and updates. This helps protect your machine and its contents from the bad guys—keeping your system updated ensures you have the latest protection against malicious attacks and software.
How does this affect me?
If you are running an older or unsupported OS version, your computer and all the data on it are vulnerable to cyber-attacks. This could include malware, viruses, ransomware, and the like. As mentioned above, your computer and its data could be compromised, and you could lose what you have on there.
How do I know which operating system version I have on my computer?
Apple: From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. The version of your operating system appears beneath “macOS” or “OS X” in the window that opens. Click here for more information from Apple.
Microsoft: This varies a bit depending on the version you are on. Generally, you can click on the Windows menu and type ‘about’ or ‘computer’. From there, you can see the version of Windows you have. Click here for more information from Microsoft.
When do Apple and Microsoft plan to end support for their current OS versions?
Apple doesn’t typically announce their end of support dates. Traditionally, they support the current and previous two versions. So, if you’re running High Sierra (current), Sierra or El Capitan, you should be safe. Once they release a new OS, it is anticipated they will stop support for El Capitan.
Microsoft does announce their end of support dates. For Windows 7 with service pack 1, that date is January 14, 2020. For Windows 8.1, that date is January 10, 2023.
If I’m running an older OS version, what should I do?
We recommend you upgrade as soon as possible to help protect your computer and its data. Our technical support department is happy to provide suggestions on how to go about upgrading.
